This piece, created for Prof Pat Hoffie’s multiplatform project ‘The Stones May Cry Out’, is inspired by the spirituality of the land and people who inhabited the historical penal colony of St Helena Island (Queensland). We reflect on the life of the Chief Warden’s cook, a Chinese inmate, and that of his countrymen, who began arriving on the penal colony in 1867. The
rhythmic action of their labour is reflected in the rhythmic pipa line, which interweaves with expressive xiao (end-blown flute) contour. Recorded by Kim Cunio.
